Why Do Headphones Keep Cutting Out on Peloton? A Field Guide for Gym AV Techs

If you manage a space with Peloton equipment, you know the exact moment I'm talking about: a class is going well, the rider is in the middle of a strong interval, and then their audio just disappears. Headphones come off, phone comes out, settings are checked—and the workout falls apart.

I'm the AV systems lead at a connected fitness studio in London. In the past two years, I've triaged more than 200 headphone dropouts around Peloton live studio classes. Some were caused by equipment failure, but most weren't.

So, if you're asking "why do my headphones keep cutting out?" during a Peloton workout, there's no single answer. There are four scenarios, each with its own fix. Let's go through them—and skip the part where you replace perfectly good headphones too early.

Scenario 1: Too much Bluetooth traffic in the room

Take a busy studio with a few Peloton bikes, some treadmills, and a dozen members wearing smartwatches. All of those devices are fighting for the 2.4 GHz frequency band. Bluetooth shares that band with a lot of other gear, and when the space gets crowded, dropouts become inevitable. It doesn't mean the headphones are bad.

The Peloton London studio is a good example: it's full of cameras, monitors, and dozens of wireless devices that all live near the same frequencies. I first noticed this issue with a member using purple Beats headphones. They'd work for three minutes, then cut out for a second. She'd reconnect them, they'd drop again. Pure Bluetooth interference. The moment she moved to the other side of the room, the problem stopped.

The fix: if your gym has a router broadcasting 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi near the equipment, move it to 5 GHz-only mode, or move it away from the class floor. For people who still drop out, keep a small Bluetooth transmitter with a wired headphone output at the front desk. Not ideal, but it's far more reliable than asking every member to buy new gear.

From the outside, this looks like a hardware problem. The reality is the room is the problem.

Scenario 2: The headphones are paired to two devices at once

A lot of modern headphones support multipoint—they stay connected to a phone and a tablet at the same time. In an office, that's convenient. During a Peloton live studio class, it's a trap. If the person's phone sends a notification while the headphones are also connected to the Peloton display, the headphones can switch audio sources for a split second. That feels exactly like a signal dropout.

Here's what I tell members: before you start a class, pair your headphones with only the device that runs the class. Then switch off Bluetooth on your phone, or turn off auto-switch in the headphone app. Most people never think to do that because the headphones connect and seem fine. Then an email arrives at the worst time.

Scenario 3: The signal path is blocked by your body

This one takes longer to figure out, especially if the dropouts happen only during strength workouts. People hate their headphones, blame Peloton, and never notice that the source device is sitting on the floor while they're doing dumbbell Z presses.

Here's what I mean: if you're doing a dumbbell Z press on a mat—sit back, press two dumbbells up, and move in a controlled arc—your upper body, knees, or the dumbbells themselves can end up between the Bluetooth source and the headphones. When the phone or tablet is on the floor behind your head, that's an easy signal block.

The fix isn't expensive: get the audio source off the floor. Put the tablet on a bench or a low rack, not beside your foot. Bluetooth isn't as fully omnidirectional as people think.

Scenario 4: Low battery or outdated firmware

This is the least glamorous cause, but it's more common than people want to believe. Headphones with less than 20% battery start cutting out intermittently. Some older firmware also conflicts with newer Bluetooth stacks, especially on Peloton screens that have been updated recently.

We had a case in March 2024 where a member's headphones dropped audio right in the middle of an interval. We tested them on three bikes; all three dropped. The headphones looked fine. Then we updated the firmware, and the issue was gone. Honestly, that was a surprise.

The fix: charge headphones to at least 30% before a live class, and update firmware at least once a month. A ten-minute firmware check beats a longer repair process after the class.

How to figure out which scenario you're in

Here's a quick decision path I use when triaging a sudden audio issue:

  • Does it happen only near the equipment, during busy class times? That points to interference (Scenario 1).
  • Does it happen after the phone sends a notification? That's multipoint pairing (Scenario 2).
  • Does it happen mostly during floor strength work, not on the cardio machine? That's a signal path problem (Scenario 3).
  • Does it happen in the last ten minutes, or after a long time connected? That's battery or firmware (Scenario 4).

If the problem is random across all of these situations, then start questioning the hardware. But before you replace anything, do a simple checklist: update, charge, disconnect other devices, keep the source near ear level, and shift Wi-Fi away from the class floor. That process has saved me more times than I can count.

One caveat: this is based on my work in a fairly busy studio in London. If you're running a small hotel gym with only one bike, your main issue is usually multipoint pairing, not interference. If you're in a busy facility with many connected devices, Scenario 1 will keep coming back until you clean up the RF environment. Your mileage may vary, but the first step is always the same: check the situation before you blame the headphones.

Bottom line: 5 minutes of prevention before a class is cheaper than 45 minutes of interrupted audio. It's the closest thing to a bulletproof answer in a room full of wireless signals.
